Biggest taxpayers of 2024

In 2024, Shah Rukh Khan became India's biggest celebrity taxpayer, with a staggering Rs 92 crore paid in taxes for the 2023-24 financial year. This impressive figure comes as no surprise, as Shah Rukh had a fantastic year in 2023 with three major movie releases that set box-office records. The Bollywood superstar made his much-anticipated comeback with Pathaan in January 2023, which earned more than Rs 1000 crore globally.

His next release, Jawan, outshone even that, grossing Rs 1150 crore. While his final movie of the year, Dunki, didn't reach the same heights, it still made over Rs 400 crore. With such huge earnings, it's clear why Shah Rukh topped the list as India's biggest celebrity taxpayer.

Following closely behind Shah Rukh was Tamil actor Vijay, popularly known as Thalapathy. He secured the second position on the list, paying Rs 80 crore in taxes for the same financial year.

Vijay, a major star in South India, had a blockbuster year in 2023-24 as well. His film The Greatest of All Time was a massive success, earning over Rs 600 crore. Reports also suggest that Vijay earned a hefty sum of over Rs 200 crore for his role in the movie, further boosting his earnings and taxes.

The list of top taxpayers also included other famous celebrities from various fields. Salman Khan, another Bollywood icon, came in third place with Rs 75 crore in taxes. Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan followed with Rs 71 crore, while cricketer Virat Kohli rounded out the top five with Rs 66 crore.

Interestingly, Kareena Kapoor was the highest-ranking female celebrity on the list, with Rs 20 crore in taxes. Although she didn't make it to the top 10, her position highlights her prominence in the industry.

The figures were calculated based on the advance tax payments made by these celebrities for the 2023-24 financial year, as reported by Fortune India. These numbers reflect not just their high earnings but also their significant contributions to the country's tax system.

In India, celebrities may not match the earnings of business tycoons, but they are still among the highest-paid individuals. Their massive incomes from film projects, endorsements, and other ventures often lead to them paying crores in taxes. This shows how influential and wealthy celebrities have become, especially in the entertainment and sports industries.
