After entertaining viewers for an astounding 17 years, Asit Kumarr Modi's sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has established itself as a cultural mainstay on Indian television. The show and its creator have been involved in controversy despite its enormous popularity and steady performance on the TRP charts.
The legacy of TMKOC was tarnished in 2023 when a number of former cast members came forward with accusations of wrongdoing and unpaid dues.
Asit Kumarr Modi has now finally responded to these allegations in a candid interview with Screen. Despite his disappointment with the accusations, the creator and producer remained loyal to the show and upheld his integrity. “I have never detached myself from the actors. If there is any issue, they can always contact me. I have always been very honest and kept the show first,” he said. “I have never thought of any personal gains, so with incidents like these, I do get upset, but it’s a part of life.”
Modi acknowledged that actors who have moved on from the show have made statements against him but chose to take the high road. “It’s okay. I will not say anything to them. They have worked on my show and have a part to play in TMKOC’s success. Even though I led it, the show became popular due to everyone’s efforts,” he stated. Drawing a comparison, he said, “We are like a train. Some compartments get derailed, but the train will continue to run.”
He also touched upon the long-standing question of Dayaben’s return, a concern voiced frequently by loyal fans. “People do complain that they don’t enjoy the show ever since Daya Bhabhi left, and I agree. I will bring back Daya Bhabhi soon,” he promised, adding that the team is doing their best to manage her absence and that the door remains open for Disha Vakani, if she wishes to return.
Through ups and downs, Modi credited the sincere hard work of the entire team for the show’s enduring popularity, reaffirming his dedication to making audiences laugh.
