A familiar bit of TV fun has turned into a serious talking point. Advocate Sana Raees Khan has sent a legal notice to Netflix on behalf of producer Firoz A. Nadiadwala, alleging that The Great Indian Kapil Show used an “iconic character” tied to his intellectual property without permission.
In simpler words, Intellectual property rights mean: a beloved screen persona may have been borrowed where it shouldn’t have been.
Sana said: “Intellectual Property is not a matter of casual borrowing, it is the lifeblood of creativity. Unauthorized exploitation of my client’s iconic character is not just infringement, it is theft in its most blatant commercial form. The law will not permit dilution of rights that have been lawfully earned and zealously protected.”
The notice has been sent on the basis of Baburao's character from the Phir Hera Pheri films—one of Hindi cinema’s most quoted and instantly recognisable comic creations, long associated with Nadiadwala’s productions.
Netflix recently released a a promo from the Akshay Kumar episode, where Kiku Sharda was seen dressed as the famous Babu Rao character.
The concern, as framed, isn’t just about a name; it’s about the look, mannerisms and commercial evocation of a character that audiences—and rights-holders—know by heart.
Sana’s involvement gives the notice extra heft. She’s among the country’s most recognisable lawyers, with a track record that includes key relief in the Aryan Khan ‘cruise’ case, bail for Indrani Mukerjea in 2022’s Sheena Bora matter, and successful outcomes for top industrialists, politicians and Bollywood figures.

Known for sharp courtroom strategy and meticulous prep, she’s built a reputation for fiercely defending creative and reputational rights.
The notice is for typically pushing such disputes seek immediate restraint (no further use), preservation of material, and, depending on the facts, credits and/or damages.
For fans, Baburao is a cultural touchstone; for rights-holders, he’s also a protected asset. That’s the heart of the argument here: nostalgia doesn’t negate ownership.
Sana is also handling the case of Anupamaa actress Rupali Ganguly. She was also a contestant of Salman Khan hosted show Bigg Boss.
