Rukmani Vasanth talks about women working in films

Rukmini Vasanth, an actress who became famous for her part in the highly acclaimed Kannada film Sapta Sagardaache Ello, is getting ready for two of her most awaited movies - Yash's Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups and Rishab Shetty's Kantara: Chapter 1.

During the Kantara Chronicles: Myths in Motion session at the India Today Conclave South 2025 in Coimbatore on September 8, the actress talked about movies, her next projects, and how women are shown on screen.

Rukmini talked about gender relations in movies and how important it is to depict women consistently throughout a story instead of only focusing on a few problematic parts.

"It extends beyond just one case of oversexualization or eve-teasing. "It's about the bigger picture," she said, urging filmmakers to present stories about women that are more complex and sensitive.

Rukmini also talked openly about dealing with big companies in the business. She called her co-stars "very passionate artists" and added that working with them was "inspiring and creatively fulfilling."It's an honor to work with folks that are so dedicated at this early stage of my career. "I feel like a sponge, soaking up as much as I can as I watch them work," she said.

She said of working with Yash on Toxic, "He has a good idea of what a cultural zeitgeist movement could be." Having such a vision is something else.

Rukmini praised her director and co-star in Kantara: Chapter 1, Rishab Shetty, for his bold vision: "His vision is extraordinarily expensive." You can see it in Kantara's new making-of film. The range is huge, yet it is firmly rooted in the cultural background that made the original movie so effective. That balance is great.

Rukmini will play Princess Kanakavathi in Kantara: Chapter 1, which will be released in theaters around the world on October 2, 2025. Yash's Toxic is expected to come out in theaters in 2026, though.
