Hollywood icon Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even in a villainous role, is expected to be a costly endeavor for Marvel Studios.
Downey, who launched the lucrative Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as Iron Man, is making a comeback to the franchise. Marvel chief Kevin Feige recently revealed this exciting news at the San Diego Comic-Con.
According to the report, Anthony and Joe Russo's contract lacks back-end compensation but includes performance escalators that trigger at the $750 million and $1 billion milestones.
The renowned duo will also produce the films through their AGBO banner, deviating from Marvel's usual in-house production model. Additionally, Robert Downey Jr.'s deal includes perks such as private jet travel, exclusive security, and a dedicated trailer setup.
Robert Downey Jr. has built an impressive fortune estimated between $500 million and $600 million. He remains the highest earner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having accumulated this wealth through his roles in four Avengers films, three Iron Man solo movies, and various other MCU appearances.
His return as the formidable villain, Doctor Doom, is expected to significantly increase his already substantial earnings, with the exact amount yet to be disclosed.
The new Avengers films are set to begin shooting in London during the second quarter of 2025. This marks a shift from the previous Avengers movies, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), which were filmed in Atlanta.

Robert Downey Jr., represented by WME, agreed to return to the MCU on the stipulation that Anthony and Joe Russo, clients of CAA, would be directing the upcoming films.
A source close to the negotiations revealed, “They were the only ones he was willing to work with.” The Russo brothers, who directed the previous two Avengers films that together grossed $4.851 billion, are generating significant excitement for the new installments.
Marvel announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release in May 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow in May 2027.
