The kids from Ssangmun-dong are back—this time, not in the alleys of 1988 but in Gangwon Province. According to a MyDaily report on September 16, more than 10 cast members of Reply 1988 will head off on a one-night, two-day retreat on October 12 and 13.
The get-together marks the 10th anniversary of the drama’s first broadcast and will be filmed as part of a variety program by Na Young Seok’s production crew, Egg Is Coming.
A drama that changed K-drama culture
When Reply 1988 aired on tvN from November 2015 to January 2016, nobody expected it to become such a phenomenon. It began with a low rating of 6.7% but ended up with an incredible 19.6%, solidifying its status as one of the most cherished dramas in Korean television history.
The show, unlike Reply 1997 or Reply 1994, leaned heavily into warm, family-driven storytelling, focusing on love, friendship, and the everyday lives of five friends in the small neighborhood of Ssangmun-dong.
From rookies to stars
Hyeri, Park Bo Gum, Go Kyung Pyo, Lee Dong Hwi, Ryu Hye Young, and Ahn Jae Hong all went from rising actors to household names after the drama’s success. Fans still fondly recall the heart-fluttering triangle between Hyeri’s character Deok-sun, Park Bo Gum’s Taek, and Ryu Jun Yeol’s Jung-hwan—a storyline that sparked endless debates and fan rivalries online.
While most of the original cast will join the Gangwon retreat, Ryu Jun Yeol won’t be there due to his filming schedule. Even so, the gathering is already stirring excitement among fans who see it as more than just a reunion. For many, it’s a chance to relive the nostalgia of a drama that captured the feeling of family, friendship, and growing up in the late ‘80s.
A reunion worth waiting for
With Na Young Seok’s team behind the camera, viewers can expect the retreat to be packed with the kind of candid laughter and heartfelt moments his programs are known for. Whether it’s Hyeri cracking jokes, Park Bo Gum bringing his quiet charm, or Lee Dong Hwi’s antics, the 10th anniversary promises to feel like a walk down memory lane.
For fans who still hum the soundtrack or debate “Team Taek vs. Team Jung-hwan,” October will be special for them.
