The highly anticipated title launch of Varanasi took place on November 15, attracting thousands of fans to Ramoji Film City and millions more watching online. However, director SS Rajamouli soon found himself facing criticism for his remarks about Lord Hanuman made during the event.
However, the event took an unexpected turn when technical glitches repeatedly disrupted the screening of the film’s title glimpse. It was Rajamouli’s controversial comments in response to these delays that have now stirred a social media storm.
Addressing the audience after the third failed attempt, Rajamouli shared that he does not place strong faith in God. He recalled how his father, writer Vijayendra Prasad, had reassured him that “Hanuman would guide” the making of the film.
He stated, “I don’t have much faith in God. My father came earlier and said that Hanuman is behind me and is guiding me. As soon as this happened, I got angry. Is this how He guides me?"
He joked about his wife Rama’s devotion to Hanuman, saying she often speaks to the deity as if conversing with a friend.
Addressing the audience after the third failed attempt, Rajamouli shared that he does not place strong faith in God. He recalled how his father, writer Vijayendra Prasad, had reassured him that “Hanuman would guide” the making of the film. This belief, Rajamouli admitted, had frustrated him even more when the glitches occurred. He also joked about his wife Rama’s devotion to Hanuman, saying she often speaks to the deity as if conversing with a friend.
These remarks have triggered sharp criticism from Hanuman devotees, who argue that his comments were insensitive and disrespectful at an event for a film centred around a sacred city.
Critics online accused Rajamouli of “hurting religious sentiments,” questioning why a filmmaker known for mythological themes would publicly express disbelief in God. Others accused him of “double standards,” claiming he credits divine symbolism in his films but blames divine faith when technical issues arise.

Some groups are now demanding a clarification or public apology, especially since the remarks were made before a massive live audience and amplified instantly across social media.
Previously referred to as Globetrotter and SSMB29, the project was officially unveiled as Varanasi in a high-voltage event. Directed by SS Rajamouli, the film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles. The film is expected to release in 2027.
