Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor's romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, made a return to cinemas on Friday, bringing New Year's joy to viewers. According to Sacnilk, the film grossed ₹1.20 crore on its opening day.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani sold 65,000 tickets and earned ₹1.20 crore on its reopening day, bringing its total gross in India to ₹188.57 crore and worldwide earnings to ₹318 crore. This performance secured it the second-best opening for a re-released film, following Rahi Anil Bharve's 2018 folk horror Tumbbad, which set a record with ₹1.50 crore on its re-release opening day last year.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has outperformed several films re-released last year in terms of opening numbers. It far surpasses Sajid Ali’s 2018 romantic drama Laila Majnu (₹30 lakh), Rakesh Roshan’s 1995 reincarnation saga Karan Arjun (₹25 lakh), Yash Chopra’s 2004 cross-border romance Veer-Zaara (₹20 lakh), and Nikkhil Advani’s 2003 romantic comedy Kal Ho Naa Ho (₹12 lakh).
Karan Johar, the producer of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani under his Dharma Productions banner, shared a video on his Instagram Story showing the theater audience dancing enthusiastically to the popular track Badtameez Dil. He captioned it, "Converting cinemas into rock concerts! YJHD is back in theatres!"
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, a cult romantic comedy, also features Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur, the late Farooq Shaikh, Tanvi Azmi, Kunaal Roy Kapur, and Rana Daggubati. With music composed by Pritam, the film became a memorable mix of friendship, love, travel, music, and adventure.
It marked the first film reunion between Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone after their break-up, followed by their collaboration in Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha (2015). It was also the second of Ranbir's collaborations with director Ayan Mukerji, following Wake Up Sid (2009) and preceding Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva (2022).
