In an exciting news for the fans of the Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, a sequel to the film is officially in the works as per latest reports.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bridge7, a newly established production company based in Los Angeles, has secured the rights to create a sequel and TV adaptation of the Anil Kapoor and Dev Patel starrer film. The company, led by producer Swati Shetty and veteran CAA agent Grant Kessman, acquired the rights from Celador, the U.K.-based firm that produced and financed the 2008 film in partnership with Film4.
Danny Boyle's enriching drama Slumdog Millionaire, which starred Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, and Anil Kapoor, made a major impact upon its 2008 release, earning critical acclaim and multiple awards, including eight Oscars, two of which were for Best Director and Best Picture categories.
Expressing their excitement over the development, Swati Shetty and Grant Kessman said to The Hollywood Reporter, "Some stories stay with us long after the credits roll, and Slumdog Millionaire is undoubtedly one of them. Its narrative is universal, cutting across cultural and geographical lines and it embodies the kind of stories we love -- ones that bridge entertainment with profound human experiences."
The film follows Jamal (Dev Patel) and his brother Salim, two impoverished young men from Mumbai, whose lives intertwine with a girl named Latika (Freida Pinto). Anil Kapoor's portrayal of the charismatic game show host, Prem Kumar, stands out as one of the film's most memorable performances.
The film chronicles the struggles of 18-year-old Jamal, a young man from the Juhu slums of Mumbai, who unexpectedly finds himself on Kaun Banega Crorepati. Against all odds, he wins Rs 1 crore and comes just one question away from the grand prize of Rs 2 crore. Accused of cheating, Jamal is interrogated by the police, where he recounts his extraordinary life journey, revealing how his unique experiences guided him to the answers for each question.
The deal was managed by Paytre Topp in Los Angeles and Nick Miller from Simon Muirhead Burton in the U.K., with Jessica Hudson and James Kay from Sheridans representing Celador International. Celador will collaborate with Bridge7 on the forthcoming sequel.
