Despite being the lead of the new instalment in the ‘Mad Max’ franchise, Anya Taylor-Joy, who is playing ‘Furiosa’, only has about 30 dialogues in the film. Total.
The director of ‘Furiosa’, George Miller, recently sat down with The Telegraph and spoke about his upcoming film and the problems he faced while directing ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ which starred Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.
When asked about the lack of dialogues, the ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ director explained that for him the reason is pretty simple - movies should be fast. Miller believes that dialogues slow the film down.
He recalled that even Tom Hardy had just 63 lines of dialogue in the super hit film ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. Hardy’s character never once felt like he was missing something. Miller was able to achieve characterisation with just 63 dialogues so the fans are not worried about Taylor-Joy’s character either.
During his conversation with The Telegraph, Miller also revealed the challenges he faced with his two leading stars, Hardy and Theron, during the filming of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.
“They were just two very different performers. Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer. Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set,” the director said.
“I’m an optimist, so I saw their behaviour as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival,” Miller added.
The feud between Hardy and Theron reportedly had a huge impact on how Miller approached ‘Furiosa’. He told The Telegraph that he had a conversation with Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth about having a calm shoot.
“You have to be obsessive about safety – physical safety, as the shoot goes on and fatigue sets in, but also psychological safety,” Miller explained.
