Indian director Payal Kapadia broke the Indian film drought at the Cannes Film Festival after being the only Indian film to get selected in the competition for the Palme d’Or after 30 years. The premiere for ‘All We Imagine As light’ took place on 23 May and was a proud moment not just for the cast and crew but for all Indians.

The cast looked ecstatic on the steps of the Palais and they even danced their way up to the theatre. The cast was smiling ear to ear, striking many poses. They caught a lot of attention at the Cannes Film Festival.

After the credits rolled, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ drew in an 8 minute long standing ovation at the film festival. Marking the film on the higher end of the ovation spectrum.

Payal Kapadia said to Deadline, “India is a country that makes a lot of good films. Not just Bollywood but every state has its industry and there are absolutely brilliant filmmakers. I hope that after this we won’t have to wait another 30 years.”

She added, “I’m excited and really we’re just happy that our film got selected. We didn’t expect it and it’s an honor because there are so many filmmakers in the section that I really admire.”

Kapadia is in competition this year with Jacques Audiard, Yorgos Lanthimos, David Cronenberg, Paul Schrader, and Jia Zhangke.

Whether Kapadia’s first feature film wins the Palme d’Or or not, it has still left an unforgettable cultural impact on the international film festival.

'All We Imagine As Light' features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon.

The official description of the film reads - "In Mumbai, Nurse Prabha's daily routine is disrupted when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Meanwhile, her younger roommate, Anu, struggles to find a private place in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. A getaway to a beach town provides them with the opportunity to fulfil their desires in a secluded setting.”
