Filmmaker Payal Kapadia joins Cannes Film Festival 2025 jury with Juliette Binoche, Halle Berry and more

Payal Kapadia is not the first Indian celebrity to be appointed to the jury of the Cannes Film Festival. Several celebrities from the country have previously served as the jury.

Filmmaker Payal Kapadia will return to Cannes Film Festival

Filmmaker Payal Kapadia is all set to return to the Cannes Film Festival after her Grand Prix win at the 2024 ceremony. However, this time she will grace the jury chair instead of being an award recipient.

The official social media account of the gala announced the names of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The Instagram post revealed that the French actor Juliette Binoche will head the jury, which also includes American actor and filmmaker Halle Berry and Italian actor Alba Rohrwacher.

French-Moroccan writer Leila Slimani, Congolese director-producer Dieudo Hamadi, Korean director and screenwriter Hong Sangsoo, Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas and American actor Jeremy Strong have also joined the jury panel of the 78th edition of the gala.

The Instagram post further suggested that the international jury will award the Palme d'or to one of the 21 films in Competition on May 24.

Payal Kapadia is not the first celebrity to be appointed to the jury of the International Film Festival. Previously, Mrinal Sen, Mira Nair, Shekhar Kapur, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Nandita Das, Sharmila Tagore, Vidya Balan, and Deepika Padukone have served on the Cannes jury.

Meanwhile, Film and Television Institute of India graduate Kapadia made her Cannes debut in 2017 and presented the short film Afternoon Clouds in 2017.

She won the L'Œil d'or for her documentary, A Night of Knowing Nothing, in 2021. The filmmaker went on to win another award for her debut feature film, All We Imagine As Light. The film became the first film from India to be part of the Cannes Competition after 30 years.
