Filmmaker Payal Kapadia has recently returned to the Cannes Film Festival, after her feature film All We Imagine As Light made history by becoming the first Indian movie to win the Grand Prix award last year. However, she has returned to the 2025 event as a jury member.
Just ahead of the opening ceremony, the filmmaker talked to the press at the event and reflected on her upcoming film. Additionally, she explained the reason she chose Mumbai as the prime location for her upcoming films, as well as her previous film.
Payal expressed gratitude to the press for giving her film All We Imagine As Light visibility last year.
She said, “Our film coming to Cannes and getting the recognition, and all of you (press) writing about it, really helped us to get the film out. And, even the distribution in India was really helped by that. So, I’m really grateful. One thing as a filmmaker is that your film should be watched by your own country and everywhere else. So, that was a really big bonus for me.”
However, she teased the upcoming film and revealed that it is also set in Mumbai. She also shared that the upcoming films are part of the trilogy and will follow All We Imagine As Light.
Payal said, “I am right now working on two more films based on my city, which is Mumbai. So, to have like a trilogy but with different characters. It’s a city that is complex and full of contradictions. There’s a lot for me to explore still, and I need to get that out before I move on to anything else.”
For the unversed, All We Imagine As Light was the first film from India to be part of the Cannes Competition after 30 years. The film features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon in the pivotal roles and explores the story of two Malayali women navigating life, love and loss in Mumbai.
