There is a lot of excitement in Tamil cinema as two of its biggest icons, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, will finally share the screen together after an incredible 46-year break. Rumour has it that the two, who started their careers together and went on to dominate Indian cinema, will work together on a Lokesh Kanagaraj-directed movie.
Actress Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan's niece, reflected on the close bond between the two legends at the recently held SIIMA 2025 in Dubai. Referring to them as "brothers," she recalled, "Rajini sir will occasionally call me and inquire, 'Is Kamal hurting?' if Kamal ever has an accident while shooting. "If Kamal says it hurts, it must be hurting because he never complains," he responds if I say yes. They are that close.
Her remarks emphasised the sincere love and connection the actors have had for many years, both on and off screen.
Rajinikanth's suggestion of a potential partnership during Coolie's promotion sparked rumours of a Kamal-Rajini reunion. At SIIMA, Kamal responded to the rumours, saying, "We don't know if it's a Tharamana Sambavam (a wonderful occurrence), but it's good if the audience likes it." At first, fans believed Kamal might make a cameo. We'll be pleased if they're content. It took a while for this to happen. We are coming together because they gave us each a single biscuit, but even that half of it makes us happy.
His enigmatic but endearing response only increased interest in the project.
Both actors have been positioned as rivals over the years, but Kamal was quick to brush the notion of competition aside. He emphasised to audiences that their friendship had always prevailed over business analogies.
"The idea that we were in competition is merely a perception. I'm the same way about him. Our goal has always been to collaborate and even produce each other's movies. It's finally happening now," he remarked.

Prior collaborations between Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth include Apoorva Raagangal, Moondru Mudichu, Anthuleni Katha, Avargal, Thappu Thalangal, Ninaithale Inikkum, and Thillu Mullu. Under the direction of Lokesh Kanagaraj, their reunion is expected to be a significant cinematic event.
Kamal was seen in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, while Rajinikanth was most recently seen in Lokesh's Coolie. If the rumours are accurate, one of the most significant partnerships in Tamil cinema history may soon take place.
