Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor starrer Homebound officially hit the theatres this Friday with positive reviews. However, the film did not perform as expected at the opening box office.
According to the early estimation by a trade website, Homebound earned Rs 30 lakh net in India.
Despite the decent amount, the film fell short of expectations, considering that Homebound has been sent as India’s official Oscars 2026 entry.
This is significantly less than the first-day earnings of Ishaan's Dhadak, which earned Rs 8.71 crore and Phone Bhoot Rs 2.05 crore. On its first day of release, Vishal's Salaam Venky had an opening price of Rs 45 lakh.
At the domestic box office, Neeraj Ghaywan's film debuted at significantly less than half a crore. Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa played the main roles in the movie. The film has been submitted as India's official Oscar submission in the Best International Feature category.
The film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film revolves around the childhood friendship between a Muslim and a Dalit who chase a police job that promises them the dignity they have long been denied due to their surnames. Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese serves as an executive producer on the film. It is produced by Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla.
Homebound Review
An excerpt of the Homebound review by Moneycontrol reads, “‘Homebound’ is not a flashy or fast-moving drama; its strength is its honesty. The friendship between Chandan and Shoaib forms the emotional core, reminding viewers that bonds and support systems are essential when life feels overwhelming. By focusing on ordinary gestures and decisions, the film highlights how courage and resilience manifest in daily life. The story lingers in the mind long after the credits, encouraging reflection on the sacrifices required for growth, the weight of expectations, and the enduring power of friendship. ‘Homebound’ leaves viewers with a sense of hope and the bittersweet recognition of how difficult it is to reach for a better life. It is a tale about loyalty, courage, and finding the determination to keep moving forward when life keeps closing doors.”
