Although Brad Pitt's most recent fast-paced movie, Formula One, is about the world of motorsport, there is a subtle moment that has caught the attention of fashionistas worldwide, and it has a surprising Indian twist.
Brad's character Sonny Hayes is seen wearing a loose-fitting indigo shirt in one of the movie's most memorable sequences. It initially appears to be just another piece of casual clothing in his easygoing wardrobe.
However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that this shirt has deep Indian traditions. The aparrel is from the Indian brand 11.11, which is renowned for fusing modern design with traditional craftsmanship.
The organic cotton shirt features the Tangaliya weave, a unique and elaborate handwoven method indigenous to Gujarat's Surendranagar and Kachchh regions. Pitt's on-screen appearance is given a distinctive, tactile depth by the shirt's tiny bead-like motifs, known as dana, which are all inspired by everyday rural life—think water, wells, and nature.
Styled with a classic pair of blue jeans, the ensemble embodies a relaxed yet thoughtful style. And, of course, only someone like Brad Pitt could carry it off with such effortless cool.
In an interview Julian Day, the costume designer behind F1, who’s also known for his iconic work in Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman. Explaining the shirt’s inclusion in the film, he said:
“It was great to dress Brad for F1. The 11.11 shirt worked perfectly for his character, its soft indigo tones helped create the right vibe for him,” Julian told News18.
“Indian brands are so hot right now. The use of natural fabrics and dyes, and the handcrafted quality, fits perfectly into today’s world.” He added.
The tale of the shirt is even more complex. It is a completely environmentally friendly piece that is dyed using natural indigo through a fermentation process involving fructose (yes, sugar). Actually, it takes eight expert craftspeople over nine hours to make a single shirt of this type.
11.11, which was founded by Mia Morikawa and Himanshu Shani, is well-known throughout the world for its dedication to Indian craftsmanship and sustainable philosophy. It's safe to say that this little indigo shirt is having a big moment now that Brad Pitt is bringing the label international attention.
Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, and Kerry Condon starred in F1, which debuted in theatres around the world on June 27. However, for detail-lovers, the handwoven shirt may be the highlight of the film.
