Veteran filmmaker Chandra Barot, best remembered for directing the 1978 cult classic Don, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 86 following a prolonged illness.
He had been undergoing treatment for pulmonary fibrosis at Guru Nanak Hospital under the care of Dr Manish Shetty. The news of his demise was confirmed by his wife, Deepa Barot.
Chandra Barot's death has sent ripples across the Indian film industry, particularly among those who not only admired his cinematic work but also shared a personal bond with the man behind the camera.
Among the first to express his sorrow was legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, who delivered one of his most iconic double roles under Barot’s direction in Don.
Taking to his personal blog, Bachchan penned a heartfelt tribute: “Dear dear friend and my director of Don - Chandra Barot passed away this morning. It is difficult to put in words the loss... we worked together, yes, but he was more a family friend than anyone else. I can only pray (prayer emoji).”
Chandra Barot’s cinematic journey began humbly as an assistant to renowned filmmaker Manoj Kumar. But it was Don—featuring Bachchan in a thrilling double role opposite Zeenat Aman—that cemented his legacy in Bollywood.
With its sharp narrative, unforgettable one-liners, and a soundtrack that remains iconic to this day, Don became a benchmark in commercial Hindi cinema. The film’s enduring popularity led to numerous remakes, including Farhan Akhtar’s 2006 version starring Shah Rukh Khan.
Though Barot’s directorial ventures were limited in number, his contribution through Don remains unparalleled. The film’s success was a testament to his vision, blending suspense, style, and strong storytelling in a way that resonated across generations.
Chandra Barot may have stepped behind the camera only briefly, but his impact on Indian cinema is lasting. As tributes pour in from across the industry, it is clear that he was more than just a director—he was a storyteller who left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike.
