The actress, known for her role as Vijay Sethupathi’s mother in the National Award-winning Tamil film Kadaisi Vivasayi met a tragic end following a heated dispute over money at her residence in Anaiyur, near Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Veteran Tamil actress Kasammal, aged 71, was allegedly beaten to death by her son P. Namakodi earlier this year. The actress, known for her role as Vijay Sethupathi’s mother in the National Award-winning Tamil film Kadaisi Vivasayi met a tragic end following a heated dispute over money at her residence in Anaiyur, near Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Kasammal was reportedly attacked by her son with a wooden log after she refused to give him money to buy alcohol. This violent altercation, fueled by Namakodi’s drinking habits and financial issues, resulted in the actress’s death on February 4. The police arrested Namakodi following the incident, charging him with murder.

Disturbing Background of the Incident

According to reports, Kasammal and Namakodi had a strained relationship for years. Namakodi, who had been estranged from his wife for over 15 years, had been living with Kasammal, who supported him during this period. Their relationship was marked by frequent arguments, many of which were related to Namakodi’s financial demands and drinking habits.

On the fateful day of the incident, Namakodi demanded money from Kasammal to purchase alcohol. When she refused, an argument ensued, which escalated into a violent physical confrontation. Namakodi allegedly used a wooden log to beat his mother, causing fatal injuries. Kasammal succumbed to her wounds soon after.

Kasammal’s Contributions to Tamil Cinema

Kasammal was best known for her role in the 2022 film *Kadaisi Vivasayi*, directed by M. Manikandan, where she starred alongside Nallandi, Vijay Sethupathi, and Yogi Babu. The film received critical acclaim and further established her presence in the Tamil film industry. Her role as Vijay Sethupathi’s mother brought her immense recognition and respect within the cinema community.

She had also acted in various Tamil films throughout her career, contributing significantly to the industry with her versatile performances.

Community Reaction and Legal Proceedings

The news of Kasammal’s tragic death has left the Tamil film fraternity and her fans in shock. Many expressed their sorrow and disbelief at the circumstances surrounding her demise, especially given the alleged involvement of her own son. The incident has also sparked discussions about the need for better support systems for elderly individuals who face domestic issues.

Following the arrest of Namakodi, the Usilampatti Taluk police conducted an investigation, which revealed the wooden log used in the crime as the murder weapon. Namakodi, who is one of Kasammal’s four children, was detained and will face legal proceedings for the alleged murder.
