The Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, formed in 1967 during the delimitation of parliamentary seats, encompasses five assembly segments: Tiloi, Salon, Jagdishpur, Gauriganj, and Amethi.

For the current Lok Sabha election, the Congress party has announced Kishori Lal Sharma as its candidate against the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) and current Union Minister for Minority Affairs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Smriti Irani. Sharma has played a significant role in Congress since 1983 and was instrumental in Sonia Gandhi's victory in the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in 1999.

The Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) has named Nanhe Singh Chauhan as their candidate from Amethi. The party hopes that Chauhan will be able to garner the OBC Nonia community votes, which is a significant segment in the constituency.

Amethi has historically been a bastion of the Congress party, as it has lost this seat only thrice, in 1977, 1998, and recently in 2019.

From 1967 to 1977, Vidya Dhar Bajpai of the Congress held this seat. In 1977, Sanjay Gandhi, son of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, contested but lost to Ravindra Pratap Singh of the Janata Party, marking Amethi's first non-Congress victory.

Sanjay Gandhi won in 1980 but died in a plane crash shortly after, leading to Rajiv Gandhi's entry into politics. Rajiv Gandhi won the seat in the 1981 by-elections and subsequently in 1984, 1989, and 1991.

Following Rajiv Gandhi's assassination in 1991, Satish Sharma, also from the Congress, won the by-elections. Sharma was re-elected in 1996 but lost to the BJP's Sanjay Singh in 1998. Sonia Gandhi then won in 1999, vacating the seat for her son Rahul Gandhi in 2004.

Rahul Gandhi held the seat until his defeat to Smriti Irani in 2019.

The upcoming elections on May 20 will determine the next MP for Amethi, with results announced on June 4.
