Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency, one of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 seats, comprises five Vidhan Sabha segments: Caimpiyarganj, Pipraich, Gorakhpur Urban, Gorakhpur Rural, and Sahajanwa, covering the entire Gorakhpur District.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again fielded their sitting Member of Parliament and actor Ravi Kishan as their Lok Sabha candidate. Representing the I.N.D.I.A alliance, actress Kajal Nishad from Samajwadi Party (SP) will contest the elections.

Ravi Kishan, whose real name is Ravindra Shukla, began his political career with the Congress, unsuccessfully contesting the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the Jaunpur seat. In 2017, he left Congress to join the BJP and was named the BJP candidate for the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat after Yogi Adityanath resigned to become the state’s Chief Minister. Kishan won the seat with a margin of over three lakh votes, defeating Rambhual Nishad of the SP.

Congress nominee Kajal Nishad has worked in the Bhojpuri film industry and is entering her first major political contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) candidate, Javed Simanani, has been with the party since his student days, following in the footsteps of his father and brothers, who have been lifelong BSP members.

Since becoming a Lok Sabha seat in 1952, Gorakhpur initially became a Congress stronghold, with the party winning six of the first eight elections. However, in 1984, the BJP began to dominate, winning eight of the next nine elections. Current Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath won five consecutive Lok Sabha elections before relinquishing the seat in 2017 to assume his role as Chief Minister.

Gorakhpur will go to polls in the last phase on June 1.
