The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts towards poverty eradication in the country and pledged to continue the work during the discussions held at the PM’s residence on June 5, sources said.
A commentary published by leading American think-tank The Brookings Institution, authored by economists Surjit Bhalla and Karan Bhasin in March 2024, noted that India has eliminated extreme poverty. The consumer expenditure survey of 2022-23 also indicated that poverty has come down to 5 percent.
PM Modi, after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, said in his speech on June 4 that nearly 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty in the last nine years.
The NDA partners in the discussions at the PM residence said that Modi has a clear vision for Viksit Bharat and they are partners in this goal, sources said.
“All the leaders congratulated the PM for his leadership and the strides our nation has made under him. They appreciated the PM's hardwork and efforts in nation building. They lauded the PM’s role in increasing India’s pride in the world," the source added.
Modi told the NDA leaders that this was a historic mandate for the third consecutive government which was last received in India 60 years back.
Earlier in the day, Modi met President Droupadi Murmu and tendered his resignation along with his council of ministers.
The President accepted the resignation and asked him to continue till the new government assumes office. At the meeting of the NDA allies held at the PM's residence, Narendra Modi was unanimously picked as the leader of the alliance.
