The Darbhanga Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, situated in the region of Mithilanchal, is one of the 40 Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Bihar. It is recognized for its diverse demographic composition, heavily influenced by Yadavs, Muslims, and Brahmins.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Gopal Jee Thakur of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the Darbhanga constituency, securing a total of 586,668 votes. His win reflected the party’s appeal among diverse sections of the electorate, including urban and rural voters. The nearest competitor, the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) Abdul Bari Siddiqui, garnered 318,689 votes.

Siddiqui’s strong performance highlighted the RJD’s efforts to challenge the dominance of the BJP in Darbhanga and mobilise support among various demographic groups. His campaign focused on issues such as social justice and minority empowerment.

This year too, the BJP has decided to field Thakur as the candidate for the Lok Sabha seat from Darbhanga, while the RJD has nominated Lalit Kumar Yadav, who is the sitting Member of Legislative Assembly from Darbhanga—a seat he has won six times in the Assembly Elections. Yadav won the Assembly seat for the first time in 1995, ending the Congress’ dominance on the seat.

Kirti Jha Azad, a renowned cricketer-turned-politician, has also left his imprint on Darbhanga's electoral history, having been elected as Member of Parliament from the constituency thrice. He defeated the RJD’s Md. Ali Ashraf Fatmi in 2014.

Fatmi has also left a lasting impact on Darbhanga's political landscape. He served as the MP from this seat in 2004, adding to his previous victories in 1991, 1996, and 1998. Fatmi holds the record for the highest number of terms served as MP from Darbhanga, having won twice each on Janata Dal and RJD tickets.

Voting in Darbhanga is due in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections, on May 13.
