Why Teachers’ Day is Celebrated in India

The tradition of celebrating Teachers’ Day began in 1962, when the Government of India declared Dr Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary as a day to honour teachers. When students and colleagues wished to celebrate his birthday, Dr Radhakrishnan suggested that the day be marked instead as Teachers’ Day, dedicated to teachers across the country.

The day recognises the contribution of teachers in imparting knowledge, building values, and guiding students in their personal and academic journeys. It also gives students an opportunity to express gratitude to their teachers.

How Teachers’ Day is Celebrated

Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s Role

Dr Radhakrishnan was born in 1888 and went on to become one of the most respected scholars of philosophy. He served as India’s first Vice President (1952–1962) and second President (1962–1967). Known for his strong belief in the value of education, he stated that teachers should be the best minds in the country. His contributions as an academic, teacher, and national leader form the reason why his birthday is commemorated as Teachers’ Day in India.
