A simple travel hack leveraging Mumbai’s new metro infrastructure is going viral, demonstrating how commuters can slash the cost of journeys between the international airport and Navi Mumbai by nearly half.
The savvy technique, which involves a short metro ride to bypass hefty cab surcharges, was detailed in a post on X and has been widely circulated, as reported by News18.
The original poster urged, “People travelling to Navi Mumbai from the Airport and vice versa, please use the Aqua Line 3 and travel to BKC Metro station from T1/T2.”
The advice is backed by striking fare comparisons. One screenshot showed a cab journey from the airport to Navi Mumbai costing Rs 1,089 with Uber. In contrast, booking a cab from the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) Metro station, after taking the metro from the airport, to the same destination came to just Rs 559. A similar check for a return trip showed a cab fare of Rs 669, versus Rs 509 when starting the journey from the BKC Metro station.
People travelling to Navi Mumbai from the Airport and vice versa, please use the Aqua Line 3 and travel to BKC Metro station from T1/T2. I myself did this and the difference of fare is attached in screenshots below. pic.twitter.com/qvvIg407V5— Arindam Mahapatra (@Maha7Arindam) October 6, 2025
The significant price difference is attributed to the additional waiting and parking fees that cab aggregators apply for pick-ups directly from the airport terminals. By using the Metro’s Aqua Line to get to BKC, travellers avoid these surcharges, effectively cutting their travel costs.
The social media tip has resonated with many residents. One user commented on the practical benefits, noting, “True since WEH [Western Express Highway] is a jam most of the time. Will have a good cost and time saving.” Another user offered a supplementary suggestion, writing, “If there is not much luggage, the best is to take an auto to Vile Parle / Andheri and catch Harbour Line or travel in chalo bus.”
The timing of this discovery is particularly relevant, coinciding with two major infrastructure milestones for the city. The new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8, with domestic operations commencing immediately.
Furthermore, the final section of the fully underground Metro Line 3, from the Science Museum to Cuffe Parade, is set to open on October 9, completing a high-speed transit corridor from Colaba to Aarey.
