The Baranava village in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat, believed to be linked to the Pandavas, is set for a major facelift under state’s Mahabharata circuit project. The state tourism department has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for the site’s development.

According to the Mahabharata, Baranava, about 40 km from Delhi, is associated with the infamous Lakshagriha, the palace of lac built by the Kauravas in a plot to burn the Pandavas alive.

The story of Pandavas and their mother Kunti escaping the devious plot has fascinated generations. Today, traces of this site survive in the form of an ancient mound and ruins, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh said the project would strengthen Baghpat’s place on India’s cultural and religious tourism map, The Times of India reported. “It will attract pilgrims and history enthusiasts while creating new opportunities for tourism and economic growth,” he was quoted by TOI as saying. The development plan includes beautification, lighting, sanitation facilities, drinking water, rest areas, and visitor information centres.

Former principal secretary of tourism and culture, Mukesh Kumar Meshram, said the initiative is part of a larger vision to “turn UP’s rich heritage into a world-class tourism experience.” “By blending modern facilities with historical sanctity, visitors will gain a deeper connection to the country’s epic traditions,” he said.

Beyond its Mahabharata links, Baghpat has also drawn archaeological interest. Excavations have revealed artefacts from the Harappan era, including greyware pottery. In 2018, the discovery of bronze chariots and burial remains at Sinauli village, dating back to around 2000 BC, had placed the district in the global spotlight.
