A torrential downpour on Tuesday evening brought Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) to a standstill, triggering massive traffic jams and severely disrupting flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The intense rainfall, which led to significant waterlogging on key roads, resulted in at least 15 flights being diverted to other cities. According to an HT report, the diverted flights were sent to Jaipur, Lucknow and Chandigarh.
The airport authorities issued a statement acknowledging the impact of the adverse weather, noting that their teams were working with stakeholders to manage the situation and advising passengers to contact their airlines for updates.

The disruption was not limited to the skies. On the ground, major arteries in Delhi and Gurugram were transformed into parking lots, with vehicles moving at a snail's pace for hours. A video from Gurugram showed never-ending rows of cars spanning several kilometres. The situation echoed severe traffic jams experienced just a month prior, drawing renewed public frustration.
Key areas including Gurugram's Agrasen Chowk, Sector 15 and Delhi's ITO and Vikas Marg were heavily affected by water accumulation. The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) was forced to deploy its full workforce and pumps to drain waterlogged roads and residential areas. MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya confirmed that teams were on the ground working to clear the water.

The travel chaos spilled onto social media, where commuters voiced their exasperation. One user on X reported taking one hour and forty-five minutes to travel from Connaught Place to Dhaula Kuan, blaming waterlogged roads and "horrible traffic." Another claimed to be stuck in traffic on Arya Samaj Road in Karol Bagh for over three and a half hours.

Airlines proactively communicated with passengers amidst the chaos. Air India warned that the downpour "may impact flight operations," advising travellers to check their flight status and allow extra time for their journeys. Similarly, IndiGo and SpiceJet issued advisories about potential delays and schedule disruptions, urging passengers to monitor their flight information before heading to the airport.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast the turmoil, having issued orange and yellow alerts for the region. The department attributed the heavy rainfall to the influence of a western disturbance, with forecasts predicting further intense weather over Northwest India.
