‘Through the Death of a Very Old Pontiff…’ – Nostradamus’ prophecy resurfaces as Pope Francis battles critical health issues. Did the famous seer predict the Pope’s condition?

The Vatican's recent announcement about Pope Francis' deteriorating health has reignited discussions around the predictions of 16th-century French astrologer Michel de Nostredame, widely known as Nostradamus. The famed seer, often associated with forecasts of global events, is believed to have predicted the passing of an elderly pope, a prophecy some now link to the pontiff’s current condition.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis, who has been battling chronic lung disease, remains "alert" but is undergoing intensive treatment, including high levels of oxygen support due to respiratory complications. Reports also indicate that the 87-year-old pontiff has suffered mild kidney failure, adding to concerns about his overall health.

Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after experiencing severe breathing difficulties. His condition reportedly worsened, leading to a respiratory crisis and the need for a blood transfusion. Vatican officials confirmed that he remains under close observation, with doctors closely monitoring the risk of sepsis—a potentially life-threatening infection.

Nostradamus, often referred to as the ‘prophet of doom,’ gained fame for his cryptic predictions, many of which believers claim have come true over the centuries. His alleged foresight has been linked to major historical events, including the Great Fire of London, Adolf Hitler’s rise, the 9/11 attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic, and even Japan’s New Year’s Day earthquake in 2023.

One of his verses, written in Les Propheties (1555), has caught attention amid Pope Francis’ declining health. It reads:

"Through the death of a very old Pontiff… a Roman of good age will be elected. Of him, it will be said that he weakens his see… but long will he sit and in biting activity."

This passage has led some to speculate that Nostradamus foresaw the demise of an elderly pope, with a successor taking his place. Another prophecy states:

"In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End."

While interpretations of Nostradamus’ verses remain highly debated, the timing of Pope Francis' health crisis has fueled renewed interest in these predictions.

The Vatican’s latest update on Sunday reassured the faithful that the pontiff had a "quiet night" and remains stable while receiving oxygen support. However, concerns persist over his weakened immune system and the potential threat of sepsis.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, speaking from St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, "Our Holy Father Pope Francis is in very, very fragile health, and probably close to death."
