Centre wants to link Aadhaar with driving licence

Registration of vehicles and owner’s name will also be linked to Aadhaar to prevent instances of car thefts

The Centre is pushing for making Aadhaar mandatory for securing a driving licence and vehicle registration, to check bogus licences, create a national database and make inter-state transfer easier and less time consuming.

“Linking of Aadhaar (with licence) will clamp down on all the bogus licences,” union transport minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting held with stakeholders in Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation and Mumbai Public Works Department.

How Aadhaar will transform India in the future

Gadkari said that having a centralised database of all the licence holders will avoid duplication of information and save potential drivers from having numerous licences.

Earlier on Tuesday, union minister for information and technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad was quoted as saying that the government was considering to link Aadhaar with driving licence.

“It will bring transparency and will save people from having licences in different states,” Gadkari said.

He said that registration of vehicles and owner’s name will also be linked to Aadhaar to prevent instances of car thefts.

The government had previously ordered to link Aadhaar with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) and bank accounts and use it for filing Income tax return in a bid to push transparent and digital system and clamp down on the parallel economy that function outside regulatory boundaries.
