The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has finally kickstarted the procedure for auctioning the property of fugitive don-turned-global-terrorist Dawood Ibrahim after a TADA court passed a judgement which directed it to expedite the process of the auctioning.
The CBI is now charting a list of Dawood's properties and is in talks with the Department of Revenue under the Finance Ministry and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), according to Indian Express.
“We are writing to both the agencies to get details of the properties and their status. Since we have been directed to auction the properties, the first step is to identify them and check their status,” an official said.
A Special Terrorism and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) court which pronounced the judgement in June against seven convicts in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, also directed the Superintendent of Police, CBI, to rapidly get on with the process of auctioning the properties of 33 wanted accused in the 1993 Mumbai blast case.
Dawood Ibrahim is believed to be the mastermind behind the series of 12 explosions that rattled Mumbai in 1993.
Earlier attempts by the Finance Ministry to auction Dawood's properties did not yield much. His properties will now be finally auctioned along with the others which include Tiger Memon and Mohammad Dossa.
Previously, Dawood's properties were auctioned under the Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) (SAFEMA) Act, 1976. A private firm had auctioned seven of Dawood's properties including tenancy rights on a flat in Mahavir building in Matunga and a car.
The CBI is planning to take the help of Mumbai Police as they have dealt with underworld criminals, giving them an edge on matters related to such notable names of the Mumbai's underworld.
