The third public hearing for the 2700 MW Lower Siang Hydro Electric Project scheduled at Aalo, the headquarters of West Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh has been postponed indefinitely following pressure from protestors opposing the mega project in the Siang Valley.
The first public hearing on the project at Jeying in Upper Siang district on April 17 and the second one at Rottung in East Siang district yesterday were postponed after clashes erupted between anti-dam protestors and security forces.West Siang Deputy Commissioner Amzad Tak said that he had written for postponement of the third public hearing due to fear of breakdown of law and order in the district. The state government had put in all efforts to conduct the hearing, including large deployment of security personnel at the three venues. Meanwhile, Forum for Siang Dialogue (FSD), Adi Students Union (AdiSU), Siang Peoples Forum (SPF) and Siang Bachao Federation (SBF) called off the Siang Valley bandh instituted against the Public Hearings. The bandh was called-off pursuant to the postponement of the public hearings of the project till further notice, FSD spokesman Vijay Taram said. Around 10 vehicles were destroyed and few people were manhandled by the anti-mega dam protesters on Tuesday last when they were leaving from Jeying to Pasighat after the cancellation of the public hearing. All vehicles and people belonged to the Jaypee Arunachal Power Limited (JAPL), the developer of the project. Discover the latest Business News, Sensex, and Nifty updates.
