The BJP stepped up its attack on Rahul Gandhi over his party's alleged links with Cambridge Analytica, saying its "footprints" were visible in the opposition party's campaign in Gujarat and suggested that it had a role in the Congress chief's use of the term "Gabbar Singh Tax".
The data analytics firm is known for its "aggressive and fake news" campaign, party leader and Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters, suggesting that it had a role in Gandhi's social media campaign and the Congress' "poisonous" electioneering in Gujarat.
He also accused Gandhi of doing politics on dead bodies, after the Congress chief criticised the government over the killing of 39 Indians in Iraq. Addressing a press conference, Prasad said it was the Congress which disrupted proceedings in Lok Sabha when External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had sought to make a statement on the deaths of these Indians. In yet another diplomatic note, India asked Pakistan on Thursday to ensure safety and security of its officials working at the Indian mission in Islamabad, saying they continue to face "harassment" and "intimidation", official sources said.
In its 16th 'Note Verbale' to the Pakistan Foreign Ministry, the Indian High Commission specifically mentioned three incidents of harassment of senior officials, they said. India has conveyed to Islamabad that safety and security of the Indian High Commission, its officers, staff members and their families is the responsibility of the Pakistan government, the sources said.
On the incidents mentioned in the 'Note Verbale', they said the vehicle of the deputy high commissioner, while going to an embassy within the diplomatic enclave for a meeting, was aggressively followed by two people in a car. (PTI)

The Trump administration is imposing sanctions on a French chemical weapons expert accused of making and using such munitions for the Islamic State group in Syria. The State Department on Thursday identified Joe Asperman as a "specially designated global terrorist."
The listing comes with penalties including the freezing of any assets he may have in US jurisdictions and bars Americans from any transactions with him. The designation applies to foreigners who have committed or pose a risk of committing terrorist acts that threaten U.S. national interests. The statement says the move aims to deny Asperman the resources he needs to plan and carry out further terrorist attacks. (PTI)

The Railways has launched an ambitious mission to map its assets using satellite imagery, and the work is expected to be completed by the end of this year. According to a statement issued by the Railways, the assets mapped will be subsequently used to develop Railways GIS portal and the exercise will also help the national transporter identify encroachments on its properties.
Indian Railways have a large number of assets, including land assets, that need to be effectively monitored, managed and maintained. As railway operations have wide spatial coverage, mapping of its assets can be helpful better management, the statement said.
With this portal, land plans of Indian Railways will be available for viewing overlaid on satellite imagery. Satellite imagery is being taken from Bhuvan Platform of ISRO, it said. (PTI)

Drivers of app-based cab service Uber on Thursday called off their four-day-old strike, the transport wing of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which spearheaded the stir, said.
A similar strike by drivers of Ola, another popular ride-hailing app, was called off yesterday. Claiming "victory" for the "owner-operators" of Uber cabs in Mumbai and other places, the MNS, in a statement here this evening, said the Uber management, during their talks with the police and the wing's representatives earlier in the day, has given a written commitment on meeting the various demands.
These include a relook at drivers blacklisted by the taxi aggregator and putting up stickers in Marathi on Uber cabs, the statement said. (PTI)

In a presentation Aadhaar in the Supreme Court, UIDAI chief Ajay Bhushan Pandey admitted that 100 percent Aadhaar authentication success is not possible, due to variable factors like connectivity, malfunctioning machines etc., reported The Quint.
Pandey was making the case that Aadhaar is completely secure and that there are 13 modes of authentication, including 10 fingers (fingerprint scanning), 2 eyes (iris scanning) and lastly the One Time Password (OTP). He mentioned that the security behind Aadhaar identification has a 2048-bit encryption system which is not easy to crack.
STQC-verified machines in enrollment centres and secure QR-code in every Aadhaar card were highlighted by the UIDAI chief.

Idea Cellular and Vodafone Group announced on Thursday the new leadership team of the soon-to-be-merged entity that will have Kumar Mangalam Birla as the non-executive Chairman.
Announcing the top deck for the merged entity, a regulatory filing by Idea Cellular said that Balesh Sharma (currently Chief Operating Officer of Vodafone India) will be the CEO. He will be responsible for the combined business strategy and its execution as well as driving integration.
"The existing leadership teams of Idea Cellular and Vodafone India will continue to manage their separate businesses and be accountable for each company's operational performance until the merger becomes effective," Idea Cellular said. (PTI)
19:04 Maharashtra to seek Rs 3,373 crore from Centre for relief to farmers
Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil on Thursday said the state government was going to demand a Rs 3,373 crore package from the Centre to provide relief to farmers whose crops were destroyed by the pink bollworm and jumping bug (called 'tudtudya' in Maharashtra).
Speaking in the Assembly, Patil said the farmers who have suffered more than 33 percent crop loss due to these pests would get relief under the package. The proposal will be sent to the Centre soon, he said, adding that an earlier proposal of a Rs 2,200 crore relief package was scrapped. (PTI)

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen lifted a 45-day state of emergency on Thursday, a day after senior political opponents were locked up indefinitely for allegedly trying to topple him last month.
Yameen chose not to extend the draconian laws he had invoked on February 5 following a Supreme Court ruling that threatened to lead to his impeachment. "Though there still exists a diminished threat to national security... in an effort to promote normalcy, the president has decided to lift the state of emergency," Yameen's office said in a statement.
He initially declared the state of emergency for 15 days after the country's top court ordered him to free high-profile dissidents from jail. It was later extended for another 30 days, deepening the political crisis in the Indian Ocean archipelago of 340,000 Sunni Muslims. (PTI)

"The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) had requested Mr Neeraj Kumar, former Police Commissioner of Delhi and Head of BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit, to investigate the allegations against Mohd. Shami insofar as they pertain to the provisions of the BCCI Anti-Corruption Code," the BCCI release said.
"Mr Neeraj Kumar has submitted his confidential report to the CoA. Based on the conclusions in the said report, the CoA is of the view that no further actions/ proceedings under the BCCI anti-corruption code are warranted in the matter," it added.
Shami's contract was earlier put on hold in wake of the controversial news of his wife alleging domestic violence and adultery, as first reported by Cricketnext.
17:20 Govt paves way for tax-free gratuity of up to Rs 20 Lakh
Parliament today passed Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill 2017 paving the way for doubling the limit of tax free gratuity to Rs 20 lakh and empowering the government to fix the ceiling of the retirement benefit through an executive order.
The Rajya Sabha passed the bill, which was approved by the Lok Sabha last week, on March 15.Besides enabling the central government to fix the ceiling of tax free gratuity, the bill will also empower it to fix the period of maternity leave through executive order.
It also notifies the period of maternity leave as part of continuous service and proposes to empower the central government to notify the gratuity ceiling from time to time without amending the law.

The government may raise domestic natural gas price next week to its highest level in two years, a move that will translate into higher CNG price and increase cost of electricity and urea production.
Price paid to most of natural gas produced from domestic fields is likely to be hiked to USD 3.06 per million British thermal unit from April 1, from current USD 2.89, sources privy to the development said.
Natural gas prices are set every six months based on average rates in gas-surplus nations like the US, Russia and Canada.
India imports half of its gas which costs more than double the domestic rate.

Britain's culture minister said today that Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg's plan to fix problems at the world's biggest social media network did not go far enough.
A scandal erupted last weekend when a whistleblower revealed that British data consultant Cambridge Analytica (CA) had created psychological profiles on 50 million Facebook users via a personality prediction app.
Matt Hancock, Britain's minister for culture and digital, said it should not be down to companies such as Facebook to set their own rules on data privacy.
"Zuckerberg has apologised and said that they are going to make some changes, but frankly I don't think those changes go far enough," he told BBC radio.
The scandal has wiped out around $60 billion (48 billion euros) of Facebook's market value since Monday, Bloomberg news reported.

India today successfully test fired the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile with an indigenous seeker at the Pokhran test range in Rajasthan, reports PTI. The seeker, developed by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories, determines the accuracy of a missile and is a closely guarded secret.
Mastering it is a significant milestone in missile technology and would reduce import dependence. Earlier, the critical seeker technology came from Russia. 12:59 UBS sees India's external finances at risk despite high reserves
India’s record foreign exchange reserves somewhat mask the country’s vulnerability on its external finances. That’s the takeaway from a note by UBS Group’s India economist Tanvee Gupta Jain. Foreign exchange reserves at $421 billion cover 81% of external debt as of September 2017 and less than 11 months of imports.
That’s down from 138% of debt before the global financial crisis and 14.4 months of imports in the FY08, respectively, according to the UBS note. “India remains vulnerable in its external position and risks are rising on the margin,” Jain said. “There is no room for complacency and we think policy makers should keep a close watch on monitoring this risk.”
Jain said that when the Federal Reserve indicated tapering in mid-2013, India had the highest outflow from the debt market, to the tune of $8.6 billion, even though equity flow remained positive. “This time, we believe India is in a relatively better position compared with other emerging markets, since fundamentals are stronger now,” she said.
Excl: Ayushman Bharat scheme likely to cap premium at Rs 2,000 per family
The Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission is likely to have a ceiling of Rs 2,000 on the annual premium per family under which Rs 5 lakh health insurance will be provided, reports Moneycontrol News’ M Saraswathy. While this scheme is completely free for the families, the premium share between Centre and States will be 60-40%.
“A regular insurance policy of Rs 5 lakh will cost between Rs 3,500 and Rs 5,000, and excludes all pre-existing diseases. However, since this policy will include all existent ailments as well and a cap of Rs 2,000 is likely, it would be fair to say that the policy has been subsidised to quite an extent,” a senior insurance official said.

The European Union unveiled new plans to make big tech companies pay more taxes in a move that would, if endorsed, hit online US firms like Google and Facebook, reports AP. Insisting that digital companies must pay their fair share, the European Commission said that EU member countries should be able to tax firms that make profits on their territory even if they aren't physically present.
The plan also includes an interim measure that would allow countries to tax at a rate of 3% companies with total annual revenue of EUR750 million and revenues in Europe of EUR50 million. The European Commission estimates that up to 150 companies could be affected, around half of them from the US.

The divestment of Air India group, the largest strategic sale of an Indian public sector company, will happen in phases as the government gets ready to kick off the exercise with that of the parent airline along with Air India Charters, one of its five arms, reports Moneycontrol News’ Dhirendra Tripathi.
Divestment process of the parent and its subsidiaries will all have a separate expression of interest (EoI) each and will not be bunched, an official said. Air India Charters operates low-cost flights between Kerala and West Asia under the brand name Air India Express. Capital markets regulator Sebi is looking at a number of measures to strengthen algo trading framework, by mandating exchanges to offer shared co-location facilities and providing some services for free, reports PTI. The People’s Bank of China increased rates on reverse repurchase agreements, or reverse repos, used for open market operations by 5 bps. The seven-day reverse repo rate was raised to 2.55% from 2.5%. It however left unchanged its benchmark one-year lending and deposit rates.

The JD(U) on Thursday asserted that it never used the services of controversial data firm Cambridge Analytica, and its president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar never had any meeting with its now sacked CEO Alexander Nix.
The comments from its spokesperson K C Tyagi came after opposition parties alleged that the JD(U)-BJP alliance used the services of Cambridge Analytica in the 2010 assembly polls. The fact that K C Tyagi's son Amrish Tyagi heads Ovleno Business Intelligence (OBI), said to be the Indian affiliate of Cambridge Analytica, has been used by opposition parties to allege a link between the regional party and the disgraced firm.
K C Tyagi told reporters that his son's firm has a "working relationship" but no "business transaction" with the company and claimed that it involves no financial transaction. (PTI)
The BJP stepped up its attack on Rahul Gandhi over his party's alleged links with Cambridge Analytica, saying its "footprints" were visible in the opposition party's campaign in Gujarat and suggested that it had a role in the Congress chief's use of the term "Gabbar Singh Tax".
The data analytics firm is known for its "aggressive and fake news" campaign, party leader and Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters, suggesting that it had a role in Gandhi's social media campaign and the Congress' "poisonous" electioneering in Gujarat.
He also accused Gandhi of doing politics on dead bodies, after the Congress chief criticised the government over the killing of 39 Indians in Iraq. Addressing a press conference, Prasad said it was the Congress which disrupted proceedings in Lok Sabha when External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had sought to make a statement on the deaths of these Indians. In yet another diplomatic note, India asked Pakistan on Thursday to ensure safety and security of its officials working at the Indian mission in Islamabad, saying they continue to face "harassment" and "intimidation", official sources said.
In its 16th 'Note Verbale' to the Pakistan Foreign Ministry, the Indian High Commission specifically mentioned three incidents of harassment of senior officials, they said. India has conveyed to Islamabad that safety and security of the Indian High Commission, its officers, staff members and their families is the responsibility of the Pakistan government, the sources said.
On the incidents mentioned in the 'Note Verbale', they said the vehicle of the deputy high commissioner, while going to an embassy within the diplomatic enclave for a meeting, was aggressively followed by two people in a car. (PTI)
Official sources said the global police body asked the central probe agency why it wanted an arrest warrant against the duo.
They said the agency replied to the international police that the two are required for taking forward the criminal probe launched by it against them on money laundering charges, and not for a court trial. While the agency had furnished these details in its application to the Interpol some time ago, the global body still had some queries, they said.
The agency had sought an Interpol warrant against the two diamond traders based on a Mumbai court-issued non-bailable warrants against them in a case registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). (PTI)
Union minister Satya Pal Singh said that the draft of the new National Education Policy is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) by March 31.
Among other things, it will deal with the issue of the place of mother tongue in education and continuation of three-language formula, he said. The five-member committee headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation head K Kasturirangan, tasked with preparing the draft, had not asked for any extension, and will submit it most probably by March 31, Singh said.

The listing comes with penalties including the freezing of any assets he may have in US jurisdictions and bars Americans from any transactions with him. The designation applies to foreigners who have committed or pose a risk of committing terrorist acts that threaten U.S. national interests. The statement says the move aims to deny Asperman the resources he needs to plan and carry out further terrorist attacks. (PTI)
ambitious mission to map its assets, to use satellite imagery
The Railways has launched an ambitious mission to map its assets using satellite imagery, and the work is expected to be completed by the end of this year. According to a statement issued by the Railways, the assets mapped will be subsequently used to develop Railways GIS portal and the exercise will also help the national transporter identify encroachments on its properties.
Indian Railways have a large number of assets, including land assets, that need to be effectively monitored, managed and maintained. As railway operations have wide spatial coverage, mapping of its assets can be helpful better management, the statement said.
With this portal, land plans of Indian Railways will be available for viewing overlaid on satellite imagery. Satellite imagery is being taken from Bhuvan Platform of ISRO, it said. (PTI)
Mahindra group and Ford Motor Co will jointly develop new SUVs and a small electric vehicle as part of several initiatives announced on Thursday to take forward their collaboration pact signed in 2017.
The two companies said they have signed five new memoranda of understanding (MoU) that further strengthen their strategic alliance and accelerate the development of key products for consumers in India and emerging markets.
Under the initiatives, Mahindra and Ford will leverage their strengths in the utility vehicle space to co-develop a midsize sports utility vehicle (C-SUV), the companies said in a joint statement. The SUV will be built on the Mahindra platform and will be sold independently by both companies as separate brands, it added.
"Mahindra and Ford also agreed to evaluate co-development of a compact SUV and electric vehicle, along with sharing powertrain portfolios, including the supply of Mahindra powertrains to extend Ford's product range," it added. The MoUs, which are non-binding, mark the progress made by the two companies since announcing their alliance in September 2017, the statement said. (PTI)
Drivers of app-based cab service Uber on Thursday called off their four-day-old strike, the transport wing of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which spearheaded the stir, said.
A similar strike by drivers of Ola, another popularride-hailing app, was called off yesterday. Claiming "victory" for the "owner-operators" of Uber cabs in Mumbai and other places, the MNS, in a statement here this evening, said the Uber management, during their talks with the police and the wing's representatives earlier in theday, has given a written commitment on meeting the various demands.
These include a relook at drivers blacklisted by the taxi aggregator and putting up stickers in Marathi on Uber cabs, the statement said. (PTI)
In a presentation on Aadhaar in the Supreme Court, UIDAI chief Ajay Bhushan Pandey admitted that 100 percent Aadhaar authentication success is not possible, due to variable factors like connectivity, malfunctioning machines etc., reported The Quint.
Pandey was making the case that Aadhaar is completely secure and that there are 13 modes of authentication, including 10 fingers (fingerprint scanning), 2 eyes (iris scanning) and lastly the One Time Password (OTP). He mentioned that the security behind Aadhaar identification has a 2048-bit encryption system whichis not easy to crack.
STQC-verified machines in enrollment centres and secure QR-code in every Aadhaar card were highlighted by the UIDAI chief.

145th meeting on Thursdayhas made large provision of funds for crucial projects such as the metro corridors, Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link, development of flyovers, creek bridges and road network, MMRDA said in a statement it issued.
It has made a budgetary provision of Rs 4,700 crore for seven metro projects - including the Dahisar to DN Nagar Metro-2A corridor, the Andheri (East) to Dahisar (East) Metro-7 corridor, the DN Nagar to Mandale Metro-2B, the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 corridor, the Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavli Metro-4 corridor, the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro-5 and Swami Samarth Nagar-JVLR-SEEPZ-Vikhroli Metro-6 corridors. Idea Cellular and Vodafone Group announced on Thursday the new leadership team of the soon-to-be-merged entitythat will have Kumar Mangalam Birla as the non-executive Chairman.
Announcing the top deck for the merged entity, a regulatory filing by Idea Cellular said that Balesh Sharma (currently Chief Operating Officer of Vodafone India) will be the CEO. He will be responsible for the combined business strategy and its execution as well as driving integration.
"The existing leadership teams of Idea Cellular and Vodafone India will continue to manage their separate businesses and be accountable for each company's operational performance until the merger becomes effective," Idea Cellular said. (PTI)
