Pakistan's first reality dating show, Lazawal Ishq ("Eternal Love"), has ignited a nationwide uproar, exposing deep cultural and religious divides in the country. Airing on YouTube and modelled after international formats like Love Island and Turkey’s Ask Adasi, the show features four men and four women living together in a luxury Istanbul villa, engaging in romantic interactions and challenges. Hosted by actress Ayesha Omar, it aims to explore themes of love and connection.

A clash of cultures

Despite its international appeal, Lazawal Ishq has been met with fierce criticism in Pakistan. Critics argue that the show promotes "un-Islamic" values, with some accusing it of obscenity and moral corruption. A petition has been filed in the Islamabad High Court seeking to ban the show, urging the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to monitor digital content more strictly.

Public backlash: Quranic verses and social media outrage

The backlash reflects broader concerns about the influence of Western media on Pakistani society. Many view the show as a departure from traditional values, with some labelling it a "cultural embarrassment." Despite the controversy, the show has garnered a significant following, with some viewers defending it as a form of entertainment.

Regulatory challenges

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) received numerous complaints but clarified it cannot take action since YouTube content falls outside its jurisdiction. The show, set to air 100 episodes, will showcase romance, competition, and personal connections among contestants. Omar described the series as a pioneering entertainment project for Urdu-speaking audiences.

A mirror to society?

In a country where extra-marital relationships are illegal and dating is stigmatized, Lazawal Ishq has become a lightning rod for debates about modernity, morality, and the role of media in shaping societal norms. The show's format challenges traditional notions of relationships and has sparked discussions about the evolving cultural landscape in Pakistan.

Lazawal Ishq serves as a microcosm of the ongoing struggle between tradition and modernity in Pakistan. While some embrace the show's fresh approach to relationships, others view it as a threat to cultural and religious values.
