A severe weather system moving through the Gulf of Mexico has prompted urgent weather watches across parts of Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas early on December 27, 2024. The storm threatens to disrupt travel plans with high winds, hail, and the potential for tornadoes.

Late on the evening of December 26, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for areas northeast of Houston, Texas, after radar detected signs of tornado activity. Fortunately, no immediate damage was reported. However, heavy rain and thunderstorms continued to affect Louisiana and the Gulf waters. Officials in Lake Charles, Louisiana, urged residents and travelers to stay alert and prioritize safety.

The storm's impact was also felt at major airports, with over 100 flight delays and numerous cancellations at Dallas Fort Worth International. Disruptions were reported at Dallas Love Field and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, frustrating travelers looking to catch flights.

In response to the growing storm threat, Texas Governor Greg Abbott activated state emergency resources, urging both Texans and out-of-state travelers to stay informed about changing road conditions and prepare emergency plans. As holiday travel picks up, Abbott emphasized the importance of following local guidance.

The most severe weather is expected to affect east Texas, including Houston, and extend into southern Arkansas and northern Louisiana.

Meteorologist Brian Hurley from the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center warned that while tornadoes were possible, the greatest danger would be high winds reaching up to 80 mph and large hailstones. As the storm moves into Arkansas and Louisiana after dark, Hurley cautioned that nighttime travel could be particularly hazardous, reducing visibility and increasing risk.
