Odisha witnesses rare snowfall as temperature drops below 3°C

Odisha’s Sundergarh and Mayurbhanj districts turned into winter havens on Sunday morning as rare snowfall blanketed parts of the region. Temperatures plummeted to below three degrees Celsius, creating a picturesque setting that has attracted tourists and locals alike.

As reported by local media Kalinga TV, the Koida area of Sundergarh witnessed a thin layer of snow covering open fields and vehicles. Heavy frosting was observed in regions like Tensa, Kalta, Malda, Koida headquarters, and Kasira, signaling an unusual cold wave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously issued a yellow warning for the district, highlighting the severity of the cold spell.

Mayurbhanj, known for its natural beauty, is also reeling under severe cold conditions. For the past three days, temperatures in the region have remained below three degrees Celsius. Similipal, a popular wildlife and trekking destination, experienced heavy frost, adding to its allure as a winter escape.

The ongoing cold wave has disrupted daily life, particularly for workers, students, and the elderly. Many are resorting to traditional methods like bonfires to combat the freezing temperatures. Despite the challenges, the weather has sparked a surge in tourist interest. Visitors are flocking to popular picnic spots in the region, making the most of the chilly ambiance to bid farewell to the year.
