Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on Android phones running KitKat, an operating system nearly a decade old. This change means users with older devices, released 9–10 years ago, will no longer have access to the app. To continue using WhatsApp, upgrading to a newer phone with a supported operating system will be necessary. This decision aligns with the app’s need to maintain security and functionality, which older software can no longer adequately support.
Why does WhatsApp end support for older Android phones?
Notably, WhatsApp ends support for older operating systems to ensure the app remains secure, efficient, and compatible with modern technology. One of the key reasons behind ending support for older OS-driven phones is that the older operating systems may have vulnerabilities that cannot be patched, making them less secure for sensitive data like messages and media. And in order to use new features on WhatsApp, it is also imperative to have a phone that runs the latest software.
