New scam targeting iPhone users with fake purchase alerts: Here's what you can do to stay safe

If you ever receive a text that says, “Apple Approval Notice: Your purchase of $143.95 has been approved”? don’t panic—but definitely don’t call the number in the message. It is a new scam which targets iPhone users primarily, and here’s how it works.

Scammers are sending fake messages claiming that an unauthorized purchase was made using your Apple ID. The text includes a phone number, which makes it seem like Apple is reaching out for security reasons. But if you call, you will end up speaking with fraudsters who will try to trick you into giving them sensitive information—your Apple ID login, credit card details, or even banking passwords, a report by Mac observer reveals.

Why? Because with this information, they can drain your bank account, steal your identity, or even open loans in your name. It’s a nightmare, but you can easily avoid falling for it.

What should you do if you get this message?

– Best would be to ignore such messages. Do not call the number or click on any links. Apple never sends texts like this.

–Check your account yourself. If you’re worried about a real unauthorized purchase, open your banking app or check your Apple ID purchase history directly from the official website.

–Report it. Mark the message as spam and, if possible, report it to Apple or your country’s cybersecurity authorities.

Most scam texts come from random mobile numbers, which you can block easily. But if you get one from a service number (a short code that businesses and banks use for official messages), it could mean scammers have found a way to misuse a legitimate system. If this happens, report it immediately.

How you can stay safe

Phishing scams like this one are always evolving, and scammers are getting smarter. But the golden rule remains the same—never share personal or financial information over text or phone unless you’re 100% sure who you’re talking to.

If you ever get a message that seems suspicious, trust your instincts. And if you found this warning helpful, share it with your friends and family so they don’t fall for the scam either!
