US president-elect Donald Trump has been meeting big tech leaders in the last few weeks. Several reports have suggested that the likes of Apple CEO Tim Cook, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg have met Trump recently. Joining the list of CEOs is TikTok head Shou Zi Chew.
TikTok faces a potential ban in the US as president Joe Biden had signed a federal law which threatens the tech giant. TikTok has to divest its Chinese ownership interest by January 19 or it faces a ban.
According to a report by CNBC, Chew met Trump at the US president-elects Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. It’s not clear what the two spoke about but the topic of ban must have been on the menu.
Earlier in the day, Trump held a press conference where he was asked about TikTok and the potential ban. "We'll take a look at TikTok,” said Trump but didn’t divulge any other details.
Trump did say that he has a “a warm spot in my heart for TikTok.” He said that young voters found his use of TikTok appealing. “I won youth by 34 points. And there are those that say that TikTok has something to do with that.”
While in his first term as president, Trump did threaten to ban TikTok but has softened his stand on the world’s most popular app. During his recent presidential campaign, Trump had indicated that he would consider all options around TikTok.
