Indian skipper Rohit Sharma crossed the 4,000 Test runs-mark during the ongoing fourth Test match being played between his team and the visiting England side.
The milestone was achieved by the 36-year-old on February 25, towards the end of the Day 3 of the Test match. At stumps, he was unbeaten at 24 off 27 balls, whereas, his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal was not out at 16 off 21. India need 152 more runs to win the match.
Notably, this is the 58th Test match played by Sharma in his career. The relatively lower number of Test matches count is due to the fact that Sharma was not a mainstay in the white-ball format during the initial part of his career.
Sharma has so far batted in 100 innings out of his 58 Test matches, and currently has 4,003 runs to his name. This includes 16 half-centuries and 11 centuries. His highest score is 212, and the overall average stands at 44.97.
In the ongoing series against England, Sharma has scored at a relatively low average of 38, as he has cumulatively scored 238 runs in the four games played so far. The captain has failed to capitalise on the starts that he received in the previous matches. He, however, scored one century in the series so far, which came during the third Test played in Rajkot.
Meanwhile, India is eyeing to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series, by chasing down the target of 192 runs on February 26. At stumps today, the team's score stood at 40/0 in 8 overs, with Sharma and Jaiswal putting the English bowlers on the backfoot.
The game turned in favour of India after England, in their second inning, was bowled out at a low score of 145. The latter's middle and lower order collapsed akin to a pack of cards against Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, who together picked up nine wickets. The veteran Ashwin completed his five wicket-haul, with figures of 5/53.
