India's Asia Cup squad announced: The squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced by the BCCI on Tuesday. Shubman Gill makes a return to the T20I side and has been named as the vice-captain. Jasprit Bumrah, whose workload has been heavily debated, is also included for the continental showdown.
In all likelihood Shubman Gill will occupy the No. 3 slot with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma being the designated openers. Just in case Gill opens, which he does for his franchise Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Samson will possibly sit out and Jitesh Sharma will shoulder the wicketkeeping duties. This leaves Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the mix, but as confirmed by BCCI chairman of selector Ajit Agarkar, the southpaw will travel to UAE as a reserve.
If we focus on the other names, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel are the mainstay in the spin department, which is anticipated to play a key role in the UAE as witnessed during the Champions Trophy clashes in Dubai. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana will be assisting Bumrah in the seam department.
The big name, who is not part of the squad, despite producing terrific performances is Shreyas Iyer. As per the chairman of selectors, Iyer has done everything but it was difficult to find a spot for the star batter.
The tournament is scheduled to start from September 9 in the UAE with India being the official host. India will launch their campaign on September 10 against the UAE and will play against Pakistan, scheduled for September 14. The final group fixture is against Oman is scheduled for September 19.
India enter the tournament as the defending champions and are the most successful team in the competition. The Men In Blue will be eyeing their ninth title in this edition of the tournament.
