Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli recently drew attention due to concerns over his declining health and well-being. During an event in Mumbai honoring the legacy of coach Ramakant Achrekar, who mentored both Kambli and Sachin Tendulkar, the 52-year-old appeared noticeably frail and thinner. He was seen leaning on Tendulkar for support and struggled with slurred speech, even finding it difficult to sing at one point.
The visuals alarmed Indian cricket fans, sparking widespread concern about Kambli's condition. Fellow former cricketers also took note, with members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team stepping in to offer assistance. Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar, describing Kambli as his 'son' assured fans that he would provide support to help Kambli recover and regain stability.
Kapil Dev, one of India's greatest cricketers, addressed the situation directly. He emphasized that while he and his contemporaries are committed to doing everything possible to help Vinod Kambli rebuild his life, he also expects Kambli to show the same level of effort and determination in turning things around.
"More than us supporting him, he has to support himself. He first has to go back and look after himself. I am concerned as a sportsperson, and he has been going through a rough time," Kapil, the president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), said at the launch of the Vishwa Samudra Open.
"We are all (there) to support him. Sunil Gavaskar has already told me on behalf of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, and I extend my help on my behalf, but more than me trying to support him, he should support himself. We can't look after him if he does not want to look after himself."
Vinod Kambli's India career
Kambli boasts an impressive cricketing career, having represented India in 104 ODIs and 17 Tests, where he amassed 2,477 and 1,084 runs, respectively.
