Asia Cup: Sanju Samson showcased his class with a decisive innings against Sri Lanka on Friday (September 26) in the Asia Cup 2025. Walking in at No. 5, the wicketkeeper-batter made the most of the opportunity, smashing a quickfire 39 off just 22 balls. It was the 12th time Samson had batted in this position, and he delivered his best knock there to date.

Earlier, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had confirmed that No. 5 would be Samson’s regular spot in the order. However, the management surprised many in the clash against Bangladesh by pushing him down to No. 8, where he never got a chance to face a ball.

This time, the team stayed true to their initial plan, and Samson repaid the faith. With more than 11 overs left in the innings, he had the perfect platform to gauge the conditions, take his time early on, and then shift gears. Even so, making an impact in that situation was no straightforward task.

Samson was finally in his element, playing some breathtaking sixes in his 22-ball-innings. Tilak Varma anchored the innings well to finish on an unbeaten 49 off 34 balls, a knock that will do him a world of good.

SKY's poor run continues

Captain Suryakumar Yadav’s lean run with the bat continued as he once again failed to make a significant impact. Coming in with hopes of steadying the innings, Surya managed only 12 runs before attempting to sweep his way out of trouble. The risky shot, however, backfired as he was trapped leg-before by Wanindu Hasaranga, further highlighting his struggles in the middle order. His dismissal not only cut short India’s momentum but also added to the growing concerns around his form heading into the all-important final.
