CAFA Nations Cup: Khalid Jamil named a 23-member squad for the CAFA Nations Cup starting August 29 on Monday. The tournament marks his first assignment as India men's football head coach. The Blue Tigers will travel to Tajikistan to compete in the tournament.
Jamil arrives at a time when Indian men's football is on a decline. He replaces Manolo Marquez as the new head coach with the Spaniard stepping down from his position last month. The step was taken after India’s 1-0 defeat to lower-ranked Hong Kong in June, further dashing their hopes to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup in 2027. India had earlier engaged in a goalless stalemate against Bangladesh in the opening match of their Asian Cup qualifiers.
"We have information on Tajikistan, Iran, and Afghanistan. They are strong sides and have done well recently. But we must focus on our own game and be mentally prepared. The key is belief and playing as a unit. There is improvement, but it will take time. Focus should also be given to juniors alongside seniors, to build a strong future,” noted Jamil in the press conference held earlier in the day in Bengaluru.
