There’s something comforting about a full moon at twilight. This month, skywatchers in India can witness a soft spectacle — the Strawberry Moon — rising low and golden in the evening sky. It’s more than just a name; it’s nature’s gentle nod to the arrival of summer.

Final Spring Moon Will Rise on 10 June Evening

The Strawberry Moon will officially reach its full phase at 1:15 p.m. IST on 11 June. But the best time to view it in India will be on the evening of 10 June, just after sunset. The moon will appear low over the southeastern horizon, casting a warm glow through the twilight.

This full moon marks the final one of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also the lowest full moon of the year for those living north of the equator. Due to its position opposite the Sun and with the summer solstice just around the corner, the moon will stay low all night. Viewers can expect it to move across the southern sky before setting in the southwest by dawn.

Close to Horizon, Far from the Sun

This month’s moon will appear low and distant. That’s because Earth is nearing aphelion — its farthest point from the sun — which will occur on 3 July. As the moon stands opposite the sun in the sky, it too lies farther than usual from our star. This renders its shine even softer and more spread out.

While gazing at the moonrise, viewers might see the bright red star Antares in the vicinity. It is part of the Scorpius constellation and is approximately 550 light-years from Earth. To locate it, glance slightly above and to the right of the moon.

Why It’s Called the Strawberry Moon

The name “Strawberry Moon” comes from Native American traditions, who named full moons after seasonal signs. In June, wild strawberries ripen, giving this moon its fruity title. Other names include Berries Ripen Moon, Hot Moon and Green Corn Moon.

Across English and Celtic folklore, this full moon has other poetic names too. It’s been called the Rose Moon, Planting Moon, Horse Moon and Mead Moon — each linked to blossoming fields and warm midsummer nights.

So as the Strawberry Moon graces the sky on 10 June, take a moment to step outside and look up. It’s a fleeting glimpse of seasonal beauty — low in the sky but rich in summer charm.
