The Legend Behind Sita’s Curse

As they gathered the necessary materials, time slipped away, and Rama and Lakshmana were nowhere to be found. Understanding the urgency of the situation, Goddess Sita took it upon herself to perform the funeral rites for her father-in-law. She carried out the rituals with utmost dedication and respect.

When Rama and Lakshmana returned and questioned Sita about her actions, she explained the situation and assured them that she had performed the rites sincerely. She mentioned that at the time of the rituals, a Brahmin, a cow, a crow, and the Falgu River were present. Rama and Lakshmana could verify the truth from these witnesses.

However, when questioned, the Brahmin, cow, crow, and Falgu River all falsely claimed that no rituals had taken place. Furious at their deceit, Sita cursed each of them:

  • Curse on the Brahmin: Sita cursed the Brahmin that no matter how much wealth he acquires, he will never be free from poverty.
  • Curse on the Crow: She cursed the crow that it would never feel full eating alone and would die a painful death.
  • Curse on the Falgu River: Despite having water, the Falgu River would always appear dry.
  • Curse on the Cow: Sita cursed the cow to live its life eating leftover food.

These curses have endured through time, affecting the lives of these beings even today. The Brahmin continues to struggle with poverty despite wealth, the crow remains unsatisfied, the Falgu River appears dry despite its water, and the cow endures a life of eating leftovers.
