Note: Parana (breaking the fast) should ideally be done during Pratahkal (early morning) and only after the end of Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi Tithi). Breaking the fast-during Madhyahna (midday) should be avoided unless unavoidable.

The Importance of Parana

Parana, the act of breaking the Ekadashi fast, holds great significance. It must be performed only after sunrise on the next day (Dwadashi) and within the Dwadashi Tithi. Failing to break the fast within this period is considered a spiritual lapse.

Devotees are advised to avoid breaking the fast during Hari Vasara. If for any reason the fast cannot be broken during the preferred morning hours, it can be done after Madhyahna.

Devotees with unwavering dedication to Lord Vishnu may observe the fast on both days for enhanced spiritual benefits.

Rituals and Do’s on Shattila Ekadashi

  • Perform Vishnu Puja: Worship Lord Vishnu with complete devotion. Offer Tulsi leaves, flowers, incense sticks, and lamps to the deity. Chanting Vishnu mantras, such as the Vishnu Sahasranama, is highly beneficial.
  • Use Sesame Seeds: Sesame seeds (til) hold immense significance on this day. Take a bath with water infused with sesame seeds. Offer sesame seeds during the puja. Consume sesame-based dishes, such as til laddoo or til kheer, as they are considered auspicious.
  • Opt for Sattvic Food: If you cannot observe a complete fast, consume only sattvic (pure vegetarian) food. Avoid garlic, onion, and tamasic (heavy or impure) ingredients.
  • Charity and Donations: Donating to the needy is a vital part of Shattila Ekadashi. Offer sesame seeds, clothes, food, or monetary help to those in need. Charity performed on this day is believed to bring immense spiritual rewards.
  • Recite Mantras: Chanting mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu enhances mental peace and spiritual growth. Mantras such as “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” are particularly effective.
Don’ts on Shattila Ekadashi
  • Avoid Rice: Consuming rice on Ekadashi is strictly prohibited as it is believed to carry negative energies. Rice is traditionally associated with Lord Vishnu’s sweat, making it unsuitable for this sacred day.
  • Refrain from Anger and Lies: Maintain mental and physical purity by avoiding anger, dishonesty, and negativity. Such actions dilute the spiritual benefits of the vrat.
  • Do Not Eat Brinjal: Brinjal is considered tamasic (impure) and should be avoided during Ekadashi.
  • Avoid Sweeping the House: Sweeping is discouraged on this day to prevent harming microscopic organisms, adhering to the principle of non-violence.
  • Stay Away from Tamasic Foods: Do not consume foods like garlic, onion, or alcohol, as they are considered impure and disrupt the vrat’s sanctity.
Significance of Shattila Ekadashi

Shattila Ekadashi derives its name from ‘shat’ (six) and ‘tila’ (sesame seeds), highlighting the importance of sesame seeds in six forms: bathing, consuming, donating, offering in puja, making dishes, and performing charity. Observing this vrat with devotion helps cleanse sins, purify the mind, and attract divine blessings. It is said to ensure prosperity, happiness, and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Shattila Ekadashi is more than just a day of fasting; it is an opportunity to connect with the divine, practice self-discipline, and enhance spiritual growth. By following the rituals, observing the do’s and don’ts, and performing acts of charity, devotees can experience immense spiritual fulfilment and prosperity. Embrace the auspiciousness of this sacred day and seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu for a life filled with peace and contentment.
