The fast associated with Ekadashi begins on the preceding night and is concluded the next day through a ritual known as Parana. Parana refers to the act of breaking the Ekadashi fast, which should ideally be done after sunrise on the Dwadashi Tithi (the day after Ekadashi). It is essential to perform Parana within the Dwadashi Tithi to uphold the sanctity of the fast.

Failing to complete Parana during Dwadashi is considered inappropriate. Additionally, Parana must not be done during Hari Vasara, the first one-fourth duration of the Dwadashi Tithi. Devotees are encouraged to break their fast during Pratahkal (early morning) for the best results. If this is not possible, Parana can be performed after Madhyahna (midday).

Sometimes, Ekadashi fasting is marked on two consecutive days. In such cases, it is recommended that householders (Smarthas) observe the fast on the first day, while the second day is reserved for Vaishnavas, ascetics (Sanyasis), widows, or those pursuing spiritual liberation (Moksha).

Devotees seeking to demonstrate staunch devotion to Lord Vishnu may choose to observe fasting on both days to earn the divine love and blessings of the deity.

Shattila Ekadashi: Significance

Shattila Ekadashi derives its name from “til” (sesame seeds), which are considered highly sacred on this day. Devotees often donate sesame seeds, prepare offerings using them, and include them in their fasting meals. This Ekadashi is believed to cleanse one’s mind and body, helping devotees earn spiritual merit while fostering humility and generosity.

Shattila Ekadashi is more than just a day of fasting—it is an opportunity to reflect on one’s spiritual journey and strengthen one’s connection with Lord Vishnu. Observing the fast with sincerity and following the Parana rituals correctly can help devotees reap immense spiritual benefits and seek divine blessings.
