Raksha Bandhan 2025 will be celebrated on Saturday, August 9. According to the Hindu calendar, the festival falls on the full moon day (Purnima) in the month of Shravana. The auspicious time for the Rakhi tying ceremony (Thread Ceremony) is from 06:14 AM to 01:24 PM, once the Bhadra period ends.

Significance of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan, also known simply as Rakhi, is a cherished Hindu festival that symbolizes the strong bond of love and protection between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie a sacred thread called Rakhi on their brothers' wrists, praying for their well-being and long life. In return, brothers offer gifts and vow to protect their sisters.

The ideal time to tie Rakhi is during Aparahna, or the late afternoon, as per Hindu day division. If Aparahna is not available, Pradosh Kaal (early evening) is also considered auspicious.

Avoid Tying Rakhi During Bhadra

Bhadra Kaal is considered inauspicious for all sacred activities, including Raksha Bandhan rituals. It usually prevails during the first half of Purnima Tithi. Hindu scriptures like Vratraj clearly mention that Rakhi should not be tied during Bhadra, as it is believed to bring bad luck or obstacles. Though some traditions suggest performing Rakhi rituals during Bhadra Punchha (tail) if necessary, most experts advise waiting until Bhadra ends for performing any auspicious ceremonies.

In North India, many families follow the tradition of tying Rakhi in the morning. However, this may unknowingly fall under the Bhadra period. With resources like Drik Panchang and other Hindu calendars readily available, it is highly recommended to check the Bhadra-free timings to ensure the rituals are performed at the right moment.

Raksha Bandhan Rituals

  • Sisters prepare a Rakhi thali with rice, kumkum, sweets, and diya.
  • The brother’s tilak is applied, and a Rakhi is tied on his wrist.
  • Sisters pray for their brother’s happiness and safety.
  • In return, brothers give gifts and promise lifelong protection.
