Significance of Nag Pancham

Nag Pancham is dedicated to the worship of Nag Devta or the Serpent God. Devotees honour snakes as the earthly representation of divine serpents such as Vasuki, Adishesha, Ananta, Padmanabha and Takshaka. The festival is considered highly auspicious for seeking protection from snake-related fears and for gaining blessings of strength, health and prosperity.

In Gujarat, the day is deeply rooted in tradition, and many devotees keep a Nag Pancham fast. They break the fast only after performing Nag Puja, offering milk, flowers and prayers to snake idols or images.

Rituals of Nag Pancham

  • Fasting and Puja: Devotees observe a day-long fast and offer milk and worship items to Nag idols or live snakes (handled by snake charmers in rural areas).
  • Offerings to Nag Devta: Offer flowers, rice, turmeric and milk while reciting Nag Pancham mantras.
  • Avoiding Ploughing or Digging: It is believed that digging the earth on this day might harm hidden serpents.Nag Pancham Mantras and Their Meaning
