Mahashtami Kanya Pujan 2025:  Also known as Maha Ashtami, it will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 during Durga Puja. This day marks one of the most important occasions in Shardiya Navratri, celebrated with grandeur across India. Devotees perform Kanya Puja or Kumari Puja to worship young girls as manifestations of Goddess Durga, seeking her blessings and honoring feminine energy. Maha Ashtami also coincides with the sacred Sandhi Puja, making it a spiritually significant day during Durga Utsava.

During Ashtami Kanya Puja, families invite nine young girls, typically below 13, representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga. This ritual, also called Nav Kanya Puja, acknowledges the divine feminine energy, offering respect, devotion, and gratitude. Devotees wash their feet, tie a red mauli, apply tilak, and offer halwa, poori, kala chana, and kheer as prasadam. Some families also invite a young boy as a symbolic representation of Lord Hanuman.

Performing Kanya Puja on Maha Ashtami is believed to bring blessings of prosperity, health, and spiritual growth. The Sandhi Puja, performed during the 48-minute juncture of Ashtami and Navami Tithi, adds to the day’s sacredness. Devotees either perform symbolic Bali with vegetables or, in some traditions, observe the customary Balidan, lighting 108 earthen lamps during the ritual.

Ashtami Kanya Puja 2025: Rituals

• Prepare and purify the puja space with flowers, incense, and lamps.
• Set up an altar with Devi Durga’s image and the nine small pots representing her Shaktis.
• Invite nine girls and offer halwa, poori, kala chana, kheer, and gifts.
• Wash their feet, apply tilak, and recite prayers and mantras.
• Conclude by distributing prasadam and seeking the girls’ blessings.
