Goddess Chhinnamasta is the sixth Mahavidya among the ten Mahavidyas of Hindu tradition. She is a part of the Kali Kula, the lineage of fierce goddesses, and is also known by the name Prachanda Chandika. Chhinnamasta, meaning “She who is severed at the head,” represents self-sacrifice, courage, and the transcendence of ego.
Her form is striking—holding her own severed head in one hand while blood streams from her neck to feed her attendants. This terrifying image carries deep symbolic meaning, reflecting the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, as well as the destruction of ego and desire.
Chhinnamasta is considered the Shakti (energy) of Lord Shiva in his headless form, known as Kabandha Shiva. She rules during times when destruction outweighs creation, balancing the cosmic cycle alongside Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, who governs creation.
Chhinnamasta Jayanti: Worship and Beliefs
Worship of Goddess Chhinnamasta is usually practiced by Tantrics, Aghoris, and Yogis, but common devotees can also perform her puja for protection from calamities and for inner strength. Her worship is not for the faint-hearted—it requires purity, discipline, and deep spiritual intent.
According to Tantra Shastra, even Lord Parshuram worshipped the Goddess. She is revered in the Nath tradition, and Guru Gorakhnath himself was known to be a devotee. Her worship is also seen among Shakta, Buddhist, and Jain communities.
Chhinnamasta sadhana is said to detach a person from worldly bonds and elevate them to a state of divine bliss—known as Shiva Bhava, where the soul merges with the Supreme. Her two attendants represent Rajas (passion) and Tamas (darkness), and her control over them symbolizes the transcendence of dualities.
Chhinnamasta Jayanti: Connection with Narasimha and Vajra Vairochani
Interestingly, Chhinnamasta is also believed to have a divine connection with Lord Narasimha, the fierce avatar of Vishnu. Additionally, since Hiranyakashyap and Vairochana were known worshippers of the Goddess, she is also worshipped as Vajra Vairochani, especially in Tantric traditions.
Chhinnamasta Jayanti: Significance of the Day
Chhinnamasta Jayanti is not just a celebration—it’s a reminder of the power of transformation, sacrifice, and divine truth. The rituals performed on this day help devotees overcome fear, desire, and attachment, making space for higher spiritual awareness.
While her worship is intense and symbolic, it offers a path to liberation for those who are ready to walk it with devotion and discipline.
